The Plan was first released (in slightly edited form) as the eleventh track on the second disc of Prince’s 19th album Emancipation, the third album to be credited to . Three months later, the original version was included as the first track on Kamasutra, the first and only album credited to the The NPG Orchestra (the album was later included as a bonus CD on the direct order version of Crystal Ball, Prince’s 20th album Crystal Ball, the fourth album to be credited to ).
Basic tracking dates are unknown, but it is likely that the track was recorded between 1994 - early 1996 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Although most of the Kamasutra album features orchestration, The Plan appears to be a solo performance by Prince (as ).
