Thou Shall Not Kill is the eleventh track on the Mobb Deep compilation album The Infamous Archives of previously unreleased music. The track, produced by Havoc, features Snoop Dogg and Tray Dee and interpolates Gerard McMahon’s Cry Little Sister theme from Lost Boys (written by Gerard McMahon and Mike Mainieri).
After Prince’s passing, Mobb Deep’s Havoc said that Prince happened to be in Electric Lady Studios in New York, NY, USA at the same time that Mobb Deep were recording. When Havoc asked for his opinion on a work-in-progress beat, he just started jamming on a keyboard. Naturally, he walked out without even saying bye after he finished. Havoc kept in Prince’s contribution but didn’t tell anyone about it.
While specific recording dates are not known, it is assumed to have been recorded in 1998 or 1999, at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, NY, USA, during sessions for Mobb Deep’s fourth studio album Murda Muzik.
The track first surfaced in 2002 on DJ Clue’s Desert Storm Mixtape Vol. 3: Grand Theft Audio 2, which featured previously unreleased material and freestyles. As DJ Clue was also known at the time for leaking songs and including them on his mixtapes without the artists’ consent, the inclusion of Thou Shall Not Kill is not considered an official release. Although the compilation The Infamous Archives was issued without the group’s approval, it is nevertheless regarded as an official release.
