U Make My Sun Shine was released initially as the first track of a stand-alone single, U Make My Sun Shine, available to download on NPGOnlineLtd.com on 21 December 2000, credited to Prince and Angie Stone, and containing full artwork and instructions for burning the single to CD (the tracks and artwork were reached by navigating through a complicated puzzle).
A CD version was released through retail stores four and a half months later, on 10 April 2001.
Also in 2001, U Make My Sunshine was included as the b-side of The Work Part 1, the first single from Prince’s 24th album The Rainbow Children.
In 2004, the previously-unreleased full-length version was included as the tenth and final track on the compilation album The Chocolate Invasion.
Recording dates are unknown, but the track was tentatively included as the ninth track on the aborted High, announced by NPGOnlineLtd.com to be complete (in rough form) on 8 August 2000, which would suggest the track was recorded in early-to-mid 2000.
Since Angie Stone was a guest on-stage at Prince’s A Celebration end-of week show on 13 June 2000 but they did not play this song, it is possible that the song was recorded shortly after that in mid-June 2000 (most likely at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota).
This track is the only known Prince-related track to feature Angie Stone.
