Velvet Kitty Cat is an unreleased track recorded on 19 April 1983 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (two days after Chocolate, the day after Prince fired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from The Time, the day before recording My Love Belongs To You).
The track was long thought of to be recorded for possible use on The Time's third album Ice Cream Castle, but the song was not included on the release or any known configuration of it. It was however also considered initially for Vanity 6's aborted follow-up album and later for the Apollonia 6 album that came it its place.
In May 1985 Prince revised the track by recording a rockabilly version of it, not dissimilar sounding to the rendition of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On as played live with The Revolution in 1986.
In 2017 Velvet Kitty Cat was released as the eighth track on the From The Vault & Previously Unreleased disc of a Deluxe release of Purple Rain.
It is possible that this track is an update of Mink Kitty Cat, but this is uncertain.
