Holly Rock is a video released posthumously in conjunction with the release of the Originals album. The video accompanies the Prince vocal studio (edited) version of the song from that album.
As with videos for Nothing Compares 2 U and Manic Monday, there was no footage of Prince alone in the studio available singing this track. Instead of using rehearsal footage, it was decided to create a comic book style video with Prince designed wearing his iconic Purple Rain outfits.
The template for the design is the cover of the 1991 Prince: Alter-Ego comic book, as drawn by Brian Bolland, which in turn was based on a 1991 photograph by Randee St. Nicholas.
Silhuettes of both Sheila E. and Eddie Mininfield, both featured on the original Holly Rock release, are featured in the video as well. The link with the Krush Groove movie and accompanying soundtrack in which the song was originally placed is recalled through the calligraphy and graffiti.
After MPLS in 1994, this is the second video related to Prince which is treated as a cartoon.
