Waiting Room is the twelfth track on rock/pop and ska group No Doubt’s fifth album Rock Steady. is listed as co-writer and co-producer on the song, and he also appears on keyboards and background vocals.
No Doubt sent their original version of the track for him to work on in return for lead singer Gwen Stefani’s contribution to ’s So Far, So Pleased, and he heavily revised the track (resulting in his writing co-credit) before returning it to them. A tape of ’s work on the track (posted by No Doubt’s bassist Tony Kanal on social media in 2021) is dated 10 July 1999, indicating that recording took place that day in Paisley Park Studios' Studio A. Interestingly, the tape notes that the recording runs from 1:08:30 on the tape, and ends at 1:13:50, suggesting that this version of the track is 5:20 in length (the released version was 4:27); an unreleased version is noted below based on this information.
The track was initially considered for their 2000 album Return Of Saturn, but it was of such a different sound to the rest of the album that they held it back to use on their following album, Rock Steady.
