When You Were Mine is the second track on Prince's third album Dirty Mind, and, in late 1980, When You Were Mine was available as a promotional single (following the album's second single, Head), although this acted as more of an album sampler rather than a promo for this particular song. In 1993, the track was included as the sixth track on Prince's compilation album The Hits 1 (also included as the first disc of The Hits / The B-Sides). In 2002, a live version (titled When U Were Mine) was included as the ninth track on the first disc of Prince's first live album One Nite Alone... Live! (along with Anna Stesia from the same show).
While specific recording dates are not known, the album sessions took place from May to June 1980, in Prince's Wayzata Home Studio in Wayzata, Minnesota (credited as "Somewhere in Uptown"), and completed in June 1980 at Hollywood Sound Recorders, Los Angeles, California.
