Automatic is the sixth track on Prince’s fifth album 1999, and, in late 1982, it was included as the third and final track on a US promo 12" release of 1999, the album’s first single. Ten months after the album’s release Automatic was released as the album’s fifth single (released in Australia only). Basic tracking for Automatic took place on 2 May 1982 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (four days after Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), seven days before Delirious).
