The track was re-worked on 24 July 1988 at Olympic Studios in London, England, within hours of arriving into the country. When the album was abandoned, Prince began work on the Batman soundtrack, and proposed the use of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic for a scene. As work developed, the song was replaced in the scene with Partyman, and Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic was dropped, although samples from the chorus appeared in both Batdance and 200 Balloons.

In late 1991-1992, the track was revised (under the title Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (Church Style) or Rave Church Style). It is not known however if it was a full re-recording.
