Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (a.k.a. Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic) is the first track on Prince’s 23rd album Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, the sixth to be credited to . The track is credited solely to Prince instead of , however, as it was recorded in 1988; accordingly it is credited to Prince in this entry. A reworked and remixed version with additional lyrics, titled Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic, was included as the first track on the companion album Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic. As it is a remix, rather than a separate track, Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic is included in this entry also.
Basic tracks were recorded in mid-June 1988 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (as Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic), and Prince immediately used the track as the title track for an album, Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic (the album was eventually aborted; see the album entry for more detail). The track was re-worked on 24 July 1988 at Olympic Studios in London, England, within hours of arriving into the country. When the album was abandoned, Prince began work on the Batman soundtrack, and proposed the use of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic for a scene. As work developed, the song was replaced in the scene with Partyman, and Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic was dropped, although samples from the chorus appeared in both Batdance and 200 Balloons.
In late 1991-1992, the track was revised (under the title Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (Church Style) or Rave Church Style). It is not known however if it was a full re-recording. The 1988 version of track was edited and re-worked slightly for the 1999 release (when it was renamed Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic), but it is not certain when this work was done. Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic, which is largely a re-recording rather than a straightforward remix, was recorded at some point in late 1999 or 2000 at Paisley Park Studios. In keeping with songs like Newpower Soul, Prince mentioned other tracks on the album in a new rap on Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic: "Moneyapolis" (referring to Undisputed (The Moneyapolis Mix)), Beautiful Strange, Baby Knows and Tangerine.
Interestingly, the track The Max includes a horn lead line repeating the guitar lead line from Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic; The Max was released seven years earlier than Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, however, making it appear that the latter borrowed from the former, whereas it was in fact the other way around.
2011 live versions of We Live (2 Get Funky) also reuse the same lead line on guitar; it remains to be seen if a studio version also includes this. The song also includes a short sample from an arrangement Clare Fischer did for New Position but left unused as Prince preferred the track without orchestration for Parade.
Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (Church Style) was one of the Vault tracks recorded between 1990 and 1992 slated to appear on the planned Diamonds & Love expected to be released by The Prince Estate in the summer of 2022. That project, which consisted of material spanning both the Diamonds And Pearls and eras, was reduced to the Diamonds And Pearls era, excluding songs recorded after October 1991 (and this track as a result).
