Martika’s Kitchen is the first track on Martika’s second album Martika’s Kitchen, and, around two months after the album’s release, Martika’s Kitchen was released as the album’s second single. In 1997, the single edit was included as the fifth track on the compilation album The Best Of Martika: More Than You Know. In 1998, the album version was included as the sixth track on the compilation album I Feel The Earth Move (released in Germany only). In 2005, the single edit was included as the fifth track on the compilation album Toy Soldiers: The Best Of Martika.
Although specific recording dates are unknown, basic tracking took place in December 1990 or early 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as Spirit, Don’t Say U Love Me, Open Book and Go On (Witcha Bad Self)). In Spring 1991, Martika overdubbed her lead vocals and her musicians added overdubs to the track, in New York, NY, USA.
Later in 1991, Prince reused the musical backing of Martika’s Kitchen for en entirely separate track, Work That Fat (see that song’s entry for details).
