1999 was the first single to be released from Prince’s fifth album 1999. It was released a month before the album, and received a release around the world. The b-side, How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore, was previously-unreleased.
The single was a huge success, helping to bring Prince to the attention of a much wider audience. It reached number 4 on the Billboard Black Singles Chart and reached number 44 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
6 months later, after the Top 10 chart success of both Little Red Corvette and 1999 album, Warner Bros. decided to reissue it to US Pop radio stations, enabling it to re-entry the Hot 100 and this time reach position 12.
It also reached number 2 on the UK Gallup Singles Chart, and has been re-released numerous times (see below for details).

- On 14 December 1982 Prince taped a performance of 1999 KTLA Studios - Stage 6, Hollywood, CA, USA for Solid Gold TV Show. It was first aired on 29 January 1983.
- UK press advert published in Smash Hits (January 1985) to promote the early 1985 reissue:
|
- The initial US version of the single was released on the same day as Nasty Girl, by Vanity 6, in which Prince was heavily involved.
- When the single was re-released, more than 150 Pop Radio Stations in the USA were reporting playing the record, compared to around 50 when the single was first released. Billboard (Vol.95 N°26 25 June 1983) reported that top-40 formatted radios that hadn’t programmed 1999 in 1982 fall changed their program philosophy during the first semester of 1983. WOKI-FM programmer in Knoxville admitted that the changes in their playlists were primarily to keep up with other radio competitors that were airing dance hit records by black artists such as Michael Jackson and Prince.
- The single was nominated at 26th Annual Grammy Awards inthe category Pop Field - Best Pop Vocal performance, Male.
- The UK single remained 5 weeks in the UK Top 40 Chart.
- On 29 June 1983, Prince performed 1999 at Prom Center, St. Paul, MN, USA for the 2nd Minnesota Black Music Awards. The event wasn’t televised, therefore isn’t listed here as due promotion for the single.
- 1999 was re-released on 11 Jan. 1985 in the UK with a new artwork, it remained 9 weeks in the UK Top 40 Chart.
- 1999 was re-released worldwide at the end of 1998 to bring in the year 1999. See 1999 for details.
- 1999: The New Master was released in early 1999 as an independent release by Prince (credited to Prince and the Revolution). See 1999: The New Master for details.
