My Name Is Prince is a Prince and the New Power Generation video released for broadcast and to promote the single.
Shooting took place at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen and on location in Minneapolis, Minnesota (behind the Glam Slam) in August and September 1992. The video was co-directed by Randee St. Nicholas and Kevin Kerslake. It features actress Kirsty Alley as Vanessa Bartholemew and real-life journalists Lauren Green and Randy Meier.
The audio of the video is the censored album version. A short and censored version was also created and sent to music channels. The video was included in a different edit on 3 Chains O’ Gold with Tony M.’s full and uncensored rap part.
Prince’s face is barely seen during the video as he is wearing the chain-hat (also shown on the Violet The Organ Grinder). The song being the opening of the storyline of the [[[File: Symbol_Blu.svg|14px|link=_Album:_Symbol]] album, My Name Is Prince sets up the initial meeting between Prince and Princess Mayte. Towards the end of the video, she hands him a box containing a tape for him to watch. In 3 Chains O’ Gold, this video is followed by a re-edited scene lifted from Clockin’ The Jizz in which Prince was originally watching various footage.
It was rumored at the time of this song’s release that it was written in response to Michael Jackson proclaiming himself "the king of pop" in 1991 (especially because of the line "U must become a Prince before U’re king anyway"). Tony M. refuted this, but it is open to interpretation. In the version included on 3 Chains O’ Gold, there is a less debatable reference to Madonna when a lookalike is seen while Prince is burning panties (she famously throw her panties to the audience during her concerts on occasions).
