Back In Time is the eleventh and final track on Judith Hill’s debut album Back In Time, which was first made available as a free download on 23 March 2015.
On the original free download release of the album, the track is only a half-second of silence. Prince explained at an album preview that Hill told him she wanted to record an album like Sly And The Family Stone; the title track to their 1971 album There’s A Riot Goin’ On was also a silent track and was listed on the album sleeve as 0:00 long. The song is credited to Judith Hill on the album but she revealed in 2018 that it was actually co-written with Prince during the recording of her album. Prince also appears as a producer and musician on the track.
The retail release replaced the silent track with a full studio recording of a track also called Back In Time as the eleventh and final track on the album.
While specific recording dates for both versions are not known, the tracks are assumed to have been recorded in January or February 2015, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
