Girl was released as the b-side of America, the fourth single (third in North America) from Prince’s eighth album Around The World In A Day, the second album to be credited to Prince and the Revolution. Concurrently, it was included as the b-side of the third single in Europe, Pop Life.
In 1993, it was included as the seventh track on The B-Sides compilation (included as the third and final disc on The Hits / The B-Sides). Although credited to Prince and the Revolution, the track is a solo recording by Prince.
Basic tracking (as Boy) took place in between Spring 1982 and Mid-1983 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The song was originally Boy and was intended for Vanity 6. In a later session Vanity recorded a lead vocal on the track (which actually still can be heard played backward on the revised and released version). Prince changed the perspective of the song in Fall 1984 when he re-recorded his vocals and retitled it Girl.
Girl made its first live appearance over 22 years after its initial release (and over 25 years after its initial recording), on 25 June 2007 (a.m.) (Show 1) at the Roosevelt Hotel, Blossom Room, in Hollywood, California.
The track is not related to the Prince-written track of the same name, Girl, recorded by The Time. See Girl for details of that track.
