America was the fourth and final single (third in North America) to be released from Prince’s eighth album Around The World In A Day, the second album to be credited to Prince and the Revolution. It was released five and a half months after the album.
The single included a non-album track b-side, Girl as well as the long versions of both America and Girl. The long version of America was not given any title to distinguish it from the album version (only credited as "America"), but was the longest extended version to be released of any track by Prince, at 21:46 long. This full 21-minute version was remastered in 2025 by Bernie Grundman and released on streaming plateforms as a standalone single by The Prince Estate for the Indepedance Day (4 July 2025). This version, mixed by Chris James, was credited to Prince only.
The cover art, as with that of the singles Raspberry Beret and Pop Life, is an enlarged detail from the artwork of the album Around The World In A Day, painted by Doug Henders.
The single reached number 46 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and number 35 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles Chart.
While America was released in most of the world, Pop Life was released concurrently in the UK, where Girl was included as the b-side.
