I Wanna Be was originally the third track on Loïs Lane’s second album Fortune Fairytales (and was also released as a single in The Netherlands), but this version contained no input by Prince. When their third album Precious was released in the USA in 1993 (using the artist credit Loïs L.), a remixed version by Prince (credited as "produced by Prince") was included as the second track. I Wanna Be was written and originally produced by Evert K. Abbing. The song was included as the sixth track on the Hit Singles 86/96 compilation.
While specific recording dates are not known, it is likely that Prince remixed the track in early 1992 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA.
