Mary Don’t You Weep is the fourth track on Prince’s posthumous album Piano & A Microphone 1983 released on 21 September 2018. The track was also released as a pre-order download to preview the album on 7 June 2018, the 60th anniversary of his birth. The track is a cover version of the traditional negro spiritual from the American Civil War (1861-1865); the first known recording of the track was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1915. Prince may have known the song from The Caravans’ 1959 hit single version.
The version included on the Piano & A Microphone 1983 album is from a solo piano rehearsal at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, and includes lyrics from Strange Relationship also. No studio version of the track is known to exist, and it is not thought that the track was intended for release on a studio album at any point. Prince played the song live a number of times between 1994 and 1998.
