Octopus Heart was made available as a stream and free download on 3rdEyeGirl’s Soundcloud page, on 3 July 2013 (along with Menstrual Cycle, though the track titles were reversed soon after their initial release, leading to confusion about which track was which).The track had previously been streamed live during its recording, on 2 July 2013 (a.m.), during 3rdEye TV broadcast #8 (along with Menstrual Cycle, Moon Drop and The Third Heart Of The Octopus Menstrual Cycle Originally Dropped From The Moon, as well as a brief rendition of Plectrumelectrum).
The track was recorded on 2 July 2013 (a.m.) at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The version of the track made available is a live in-studio recording; it is not known if any other versions of the track were recorded, or if the track was intended to be part of an album or any particular project.
