1999 was the first single to be released from Prince’s fifth album 1999. It was released a month before the album, and received a release around the world. The b-side, How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore, was previously-unreleased.
The single was a huge success, helping to bring Prince to the attention of a much wider audience. It reached number 4 on the Billboard Black Singles Chart and reached number 44 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
6 months later, after the Top 10 chart success of both Little Red Corvette and 1999 album, Warner Bros. decided to reissue it to US Pop radio stations, enabling it to re-entry the Hot 100 and this time reach position 12.
It also reached number 2 on the UK Gallup Singles Chart, and has been re-released numerous times (see below for details).
