Gett Off was the first single to be released from the album Diamonds And Pearls, by Prince and the New Power Generation, released worldwide. It was the first musical release to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation (the first time Prince had given his band co-credit since the disbanding of The Revolution in 1986).

Initially released to DJs as a promo on Prince’s 33rd birthday, 7 June 1991, there was no plan to release the single commercially (or to include the track on the album Diamonds And Pearls), and only 1,500 copies of the one-sided 12" promo were made (included here for the sake of clarity).

Based on the positive reaction, however, it was decided that Gett Off would be included on the album and released as the lead-off single.

The track it replaced on the album, Horny Pony, became the b-side of the single. The maxi-single released included three tracks which are largely based on Gett Off, but can be considered songs in their own right: Violet The Organ Grinder, Gangster Glam and Clockin’ The Jizz (Instrumental), as well as a slew of remixes by Prince and other remixers (some of which were given different names in different countries - see Gett Off song entry for details).

	The Gett Off video was played heavily, and drew a lot of controversy. The resulting media coverage only drew more interest to the song and single. Prince and the New Power Generation made their first TV performance playing Gett Off live on the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, in a set similar to the Gett Off video. This again drew controversy, due to the sexual nature of the images, and Prince’s costume, which was open at the rear to show his bare buttocks. US Press Advert:	Gett Off was the first musical release to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation. The DJ promo release of Gett Off was the first Prince release to be released on his birthday since Soft And Wet thirteen years previously. On 24 November 2023, Prince’s estate re-released this edition of the maxi-single for the Black Friday Record Store Day (limited to 7,000 copies). This reissue was initially planned for 2022 but postponed due to a legal decision and management changes within Prince’s estate (hence the logo of The Prince Estate on the hype sticker of the american pressings). In May 1991, Prince compiled an acetate EP of new tracks, titled Gett Off, which was planned for release, before Prince instead decided to release the limited edition 12" vinyl to DJs instead.
