Like A Prayer was the first single to be released from Madonna’s fourth album Like A Prayer. It was released three weeks prior to the album, and was released worldwide.
The song features Prince on guitar (uncredited). Only a part of contribution appeared on the album version as the intro of the song. Other and longer of his his guitar work were used for the 7" Remix/Edit, the 12" Club, the 12" Extended Remix and the Dub Beats versions of the track that appeared on a variety of the single’s formats.
Interestingly, the Dub Beats mix of Like A Prayer by Bill Botrell includes a sample of Bob George from the cancelled Black Album (five years before the studio version of the song was officially released).
The single’s b-side, Act Of Contrition, also contained uncredited guitar and production work by Prince.
The single reached number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as number 1 on the UK Top 40 Chart. The song also topped the number 1 spot in 13 other European countries, Australia and Japan and became one of the best-selling singles of 1989.
