P. Control was available as a promotional single from Prince’s 17th album The Gold Experience, the first album to be credited to , and was available a few months before the album’s release.
This initial promotional release was titled Pussy Control, but the song was renamed P. Control for release. The CD also included the album recording of 319 with part of the preceding segue included in the track, bringing the track time to 3:19, marking the only appearance of this track at this length.
On 3 December 1995, an entirely different cassette single of P. Control was distributed to VIPs at the VH-1 Fashion Awards, containing two new versions of the track.
Prince (as ) also opened the award show, lip-syncing to P. Control (House Mix), included on the cassette. P. Control (Club Mix) from the cassette was later included, in a very slight edit, on Crystal Ball.
Both versions of the single were available in limited quantities and therefore not eligible for the charts.
A maxi-single with different remixes was compiled in July 1995 but it was not released (see below for details).
