Sister Fate is the first track on Sheila E.’s second album Romance 1600, and, a month prior to the album’s release, Sister Fate was released as the album’s first single. In 1986, the Extended Version was included as the third track on The Glamorous Club Dance EP, a Japan-only EP of extended versions of Sheila E.’s singles.

Basic tracks were recorded by Prince and Sheila E. on 9 January 1985 at the Cheshire Sound Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, after a show on 8 January at the Atlanta Omni on the Purple Rain Tour. While Prince was heavily involved in the album, he only received credit for one track (A Love Bizarre) – in fact, while Sheila E. sings on the track and plays percussion (recorded in Cincinnati, Ohio on 20 January 1985), all other vocals and instruments (other than saxophone by Eddie M.) are played by Prince.
