So Far, So Pleased is the seventh track (sixth song) on Prince’s 23rd album Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (his sixth using the name ). In 2001, it was included as the sixth track on the companion album Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic. The track contains co-lead vocals by No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani (a favor Prince returned by working on No Doubt’s track Waiting Room).
Even though engineer H.M. Buff has stated that the song was recorded "around Newpower Soul", basic tracking likely took place in early 1999 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. This early version was recorded as a duet with a(n unidentified) female vocalist. Recording details for Gwen Stefani’s vocals are not known and have been added as overdubs at a later date. The track was mixed in late July 1999, at Electric Lady Studios, New York. A 'house' remix of the song was planned for inclusion on The Hot X-perience, a 12" single mostly containing several remixes of Hot Wit U, planned for release in Summer 2000, but the single was ultimately abandoned.
