Space is the second track on Prince’s fifteenth album Come, and, two and a half months after the album’s release, Space was released as the album’s second commercially-released single, released in North America and Japan. An earlier version of Space was also included in the 1993 Glam Slam Ulysses stage-show, during the segment titled “The Sirens” (credited, as was the whole project, to ).

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in mid to late May 1993 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that also produced Pope, Strays Of The World, What’s My Name, Interactive, Solo, and a reworked version of Race), and had been recorded for consideration in the aborted Come musical. The released version (and some of the remixes) contain repeated vocal samples from Ninety-9’s track 40 Ounces (containing input by Prince) - it is unknown if this sample was added immediately or at a later date. On 7 July 1993, a mostly-instrumental version was recorded by Madhouse (during the same five-hour session that produced Carnac (later renamed 17), Edward (later renamed Asswoop or Asswhuppin’ In A Trunk), (Got 2) Give It Up, Parlor Games and Rootie Kazootie, all of which were intended for a third Madhouse album, 24). It was included as the third track on the album 24, but the album, and this instrumental version, remain unreleased.
