Acknowledge Me is the third track on the first disc of Prince’s 20th album Crystal Ball (his fourth using the name ). Four years before its release, however, a video for the song had been included on The Beautiful Experience TV movie.

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in October 1993 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced Gold, 319, Billy Jack Bitch, Chaos And Disorder and Right The Wrong). The track was included as the ninth track (fifth song) on a March 1994 configuration of The Gold Experience, and was kept as the ninth track (fifth song) on a May 1994 configuration, as well as the third song on an August 1994 configuration. It was removed for an 13 October 1994 configuration (replaced by Shhh). A version containing vocals by Sonny T. (with virtually identical backing music) was recorded at an unknown time in 1994 (possibly at around the time of its removal from The Gold Experience, and this version (credited to New Power Generation), was included (joined together with Slave 2 The System) as the third track on a 2 December 1994 configuration of New Power Generation’s album Exodus (titled Slave/Acknowledge Me), before its removal for the album’s release. Both ’s and the New Power Generation’s versions include an opening scream sampled from The Line (along with some background vocals already used on some remixes of Partyman and possibly distorded horn samples from that same song) and a spoken segment lifted directly from All My Dreams.
