| Allegiance is the fourth solo studio album by former Shalamar singer Howard Hewett, and was released in November 1992 (on the same day as two singles by Prince and the New Power Generation: 7 and Damn U).
The album contained the title track Allegiance, a track written by Prince (although he did not play on the released version).
Sessions and compiling
Allegiance was recorded by Prince initially in May 1988. The song was first sent to Nia Peeples with three other (unidentified) songs when she was working to work on her second album, produced by Hewett (who was her husband at that time). When Peeples rejected the four songs, Hewett kept Allegiance for himself. He re-recorded it in early 1992 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota, USA, with Ricky Peterson and Timothy Riley producing. The new version of Allegiance and two other songs recorded during the same session at Paisley Park Studios and included on the album, (Ronnie-O and a cover of Bob Dylan’s Just Like A Woman) feature Michael B., Ricky Peterson and Paul Peterson as musicians.
Promotion
The album produced two singles, Save Your Sex For Me and How Fast Forever Goes. The album did not enter the US Billboard Pop Chart, and reached only number 73 on the Billboard R&B Chart.
On 18 November 2022, Allegiance was reissued on CD with an additional track (a cover of Marvin Gaye’s Got To Give It Up with David Sanborn) along with the three other albums recorded by Hewett for Elektra Records.
