Damn U was the fourth single to be released from Prince’s 14th album , the second album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation. The single was released on the same day as the album’s third single 7.
The version of Damn U included on the single is not labeled as an edit, since the musical track is included in full; it does not include the spoken segue which follows it on the album version, however, so this version of the song is unique to this release.
The b-side, 2 Whom It May Concern, had previously been released on the UK My Name Is Prince single, but this was its first release in the USA (with the maxi-single of 7, which also included the song, following soon after).
Also recorded for the release was a saxophone instrumental version of Damn U, but this was not included for unknown reasons.
The single reached number 108 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under The Hot 100 Chart, but reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles Chart.
