Damn U is the eleventh track (tenth song) on Prince’s 14th album , the second album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation, and, five weeks after the album’s release, Damn U was released as the album’s fourth single (on the same day as the 7 single).
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in January 1992, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced The Continental, The Flow, Born 2 B.R.E.E.D., With This Tear, Qualified and a revamped version of Sex).
Kirstie Alley’s spoken part for the segue included at the end of the album version was recorded in early 1992 at Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. The track was included as the 14th track (ninth song) on a March 1992, configuration of the album, and the 14th track (tenth song) on a late-Summer 1992, configurations, until many of the album’s segues were removed for release.
A version with the vocals replaced by saxophone by Brian Gallagher was recorded at some point in 1992, and was included as the b-side on a planned single of Sweet Baby in early 1993, but the single was left unreleased.
