Qualified is the second track on Loïs Lane’s third album Precious (first track on the 1993 US reissue), and, three weeks before the album’s release, Qualified was released as the album’s first single, containing several remixes of the track. Qualified was written and produced by Prince and Kirk Johnson.
While a specific recording date is not known, Prince recorded the basic idea for this song as a piano improvisation, most likely somewhere in 1990/early 1991. Basic tracking of the instrumental track took place on 19 November 1991, most likely at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. In early 1992, Loïs Lane’s lead singers Monique Klemann and Suzanne Klemann recorded their vocals at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced The Continental, Damn U, The Flow, Born 2 B.R.E.E.D., With This Tear and a revamped version of Sex).
The song was included as the seventh track on the Hit Singles 86/96 compilation, and as the tenth track on both The Universal Masters Collection and Het Mooiste Van Loïs Lane.
In 2021, Loïs Lane re-recorded the track with a different backing music. This version, titled Qualified (lo-fi) was released on digital platforms only.
