Ingrid Chavez is the first album by poet/singer Ingrid Chavez, and was released in September 1991. The album is known and referenced May 19,1992 but actually was not given a proper title (only the artist’s name appear on the spine). Since the artwork bears the handwritten mention of "May 19,1992", it was wrongly assumed that this was the name of the album. Ingrid Chavez explained that the "album cover is a date. That’s what it is, it doesn’t have a title, just has a date. We did that because all the poems that are in there are basically journal entries. So we decided to do that for the cover, like 'this is just a journal entry', it’s a chapter in our lives". May 19,1992 is not mentioned either on the singles released from that album, although some pressings (not all) contain that date on the disc (CD or vinyl label).

The album contained five tracks with musical and production input by Prince (as Paisley Park): Heaven Must Be Near, Elephant Box, Slappy Dappy, Jadestone and Whispering Dandelions (the lyrics of each track were written by Ingrid Chavez). Prince also appeared playing guitar and keyboard on the track Candle Dance.

Sessions and compiling

Ingrid Chavez’s vocals were largely pulled from poetry reading sessions she did with Prince in December 1987 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, MN, USA, shortly after cancelling the release of “The Black Album”.

He accompanied the readings on piano, but the vocals were given new backing music by Prince for the album in March and early April 1991, at Larrabee Sound Studios in North Hollywood, California (although Heaven Must Be Near was finished much earlier, in August 1989, at Paisley Park Studios).

The full list of tracks worked on in the initial December 1987, poetry readings is: Heaven Must Be Near, Crystal City Cry, Wintersong, Whispering Dandelions, Slappy Dappy, Candle Dance, Elephant Box, Touch Of Love, Blue Boy, Jadestone, Sad Puppet Dance, Reason Enough, Standing In The Rain and Cross The Line.

Wintersong and Sad Puppet Dance receive song entry pages, but are not shown as Prince-related tracks below, as the versions released re-recorded with new music containing no input by Prince.

Promotion

The album produced two commercially-released singles, Elephant Box and Hippy Blood, and one promotional single, Heaven Must Be Near, but the album did not enter the charts, and sold modestly.

  • In 2011, Ingrid Chavez began selling signed copies of the CD through her website; she mentioned that she had several boxes of the CD, and it was time to get rid of them.
