Elephant Box is the fourth track on Ingrid Chavez’s eponymous album, and, four weeks before the album’s release, Elephant Box was released as the album’s first single, containing several remixes.
Although specific recording dates are unknown, Ingrid Chavez’s vocal track was recorded with an improvised electric piano backing by Prince in mid-December 1987, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (shortly after cancelling the release of “The Black Album”, during the same set of sessions as Reason Enough, Heaven Must Be Near, Crystal City Cry, Wintersong, Whispering Dandelions, Slappy Dappy, Candle Dance, Touch Of Love, Blue Boy, Jadestone, Sad Puppet Dance, Standing In The Rain and Cross The Line). Prince recorded a new musical backing for the track in early March 1991, at Larrabee Sound Studios in North Hollywood, California (during the same set of sessions as recording new musical backings for Slappy Dappy, Jadestone and Whispering Dandelions). It is likely that the remixes included on the single were recorded in Summer 1991, although recording dates and locations are not known.
