Arrogance is the twelfth track (eleventh song) on Prince’s 14th album , the second album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation.

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in early December 1991, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced Sexy M.F., The Morning Papers, The Sacrifice Of Victor and And God Created Woman). Kirsty Alley’s spoken part for the segue included at the end of the album version was recorded in early 1992 at Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. The track was included as the 16th track (tenth song) on a March 1992, configuration of the album, and the 16th track (eleventh song) on a late-Summer 1992, configuration, before many of the album’s segues were removed for release.

The song contains samples from I Know You Got Soul, written and performed by Eric B. & Rakim (from Paid In Full 1987, also released as a single) and Niggaz 4 Life, written by The D.O.C., Dr. Dre and MC Ren, as performed by N.W.A. (from Niggaz4live 1991 - see the Trivia section below). These samples are barely noticeable however. The "Jazz Mix" of Jazz It Up, written and performed by C.F.M. Band (from the single Jazz It Up 1991), is incorrectly listed on the booklet as a track sampled on Arrogance. The vocal part used from that song is actually from the "Jam Mix" of Jazz It Up and not from the "Jazz Mix".

An alternate take was one of the Vault tracks recorded between 1990 and 1992 slated to appear on the planned Diamonds & Love expected to be released by The Prince Estate in the summer of 2022. That project, which consisted of material spanning both the Diamonds And Pearls and eras, was reduced to the Diamonds And Pearls era, excluding songs recorded after October 1991 (and this track as a result).

  • The song contains a credited but barely audible sample of a man screaming taken from Niggaz 4 Life by N.W.A., the title track of their 1991 album. Interestingly, the original N.W.A. song contains a recognizable but uncredited sample of the flute intro of Around The World In A Day.
