Baby Don’t Care (originally titled Holly Don’t Care) is the eighth track on Mayte’s first and only album Child Of The Sun. The song was written and produced by Prince (prior to the name change to ), although the writing credit is listed as "", and no production credit is given.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking (as Holly Don’t Care) took place in September 1992 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with Down, The P, The Halls Of Desire, Paris 1798430, Uncle Sam and a revamped version of Shhh, when Prince became involved in Tevin Campbell’s album I’m Ready). Actress and singer Holly Robinson sang lead vocals and it isn’t known if Tevin Campbell recorded vocals for the track. Horn overdubs by Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss were recorded on 15 November 1992 (on the same day as horn overdubs on Hit U In The Socket).
Mayte’s version was recorded in 1993 or 1994, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, probably using the same basic tracks, although this is unverified. It was included, in a slightly different mix than released, as the eighth track on a 5 May 1995 configuration of Child Of The Sun, where it remained for release, although it was worked on further in Summer 1995 before release.
It is not known if the track was included on Mayte’s album Scorpio, which included some tracks from Child Of The Sun.
Prince’s version (guide vocal) of Holly Don’t Care was one of the Vault tracks recorded between 1990 and 1992 slated to appear on the planned Diamonds & Love expected to be released by The Prince Estate in the summer of 2022. That project, which consisted of material spanning both the Diamonds And Pearls and eras, was reduced to the Diamonds And Pearls era, excluding songs recorded after October 1991 (and this track as a result).
