Breakfast Can Wait is the sixth track on Prince’s 37th album Art Official Age, but it was first available for download 18 months earlier from Prince’s 3rdEyeGirl.com website on the day the site opened (along with two versions of Screwdriver and a remix of Rock And Roll Love Affair).
Six months later, on 17 August 2013, the track was re-released on 3rdEyeTunes.com with artwork showing comedian Dave Chappelle dressed as Prince and serving pancakes, from a 2004 sketch from an episode of Chappelle’s Show.
On 3 September 2013, Kobalt released the Breakfast Can Wait single with the same artwork on iTunes and Amazon. The following month, a digital maxi-single titled The Breakfast Experience was released, containing new remixes of the track by Joshua Welton. At the time the single was not announced as being connected to any album or larger project, and it is likely that the publicity generated by the track, and more specifically its artwork, led to its inclusion on Art Official Age.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking is believed to have taken place in late December 2012 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
