God was released as the b-side of Purple Rain, the third single from Prince’s seventh album Purple Rain. The UK 12" release of the single contained God (Love Theme From Purple Rain), a 7:54 instrumental version heard in the movie Purple Rain, but other worldwide releases in 1984 contained a completely re-recorded vocal version, simply titled God.

In 1993, the vocal version was included as the 18th track on The B-Sides compilation (included as the third and final disc on The Hits / The B-Sides). The instrumental “Love Theme From Purple Rain” version was included on Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded Edition Single Edits & B-Sides.

Basic tracking for God (Love Theme From Purple Rain) took place on 7 February 1984 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (the same day as the version of Father’s Song and Wendy & Lisa ’rehearsal' version of Purple Rain used in Purple Rain).

The vocal version, God, was recorded six months later, on 19 August 1984, at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

  • The outro of the "vocal version" of God contains the line "Wake up, children, dance the electric dance, there's not much time" which echoes the intro The Dance Electric recorded two days earlier ("Good morning children / Take a look out your window / Our world is falling / It's almost time to go / Dance the Dance Electric / The rhythm is love and love is blind / Love your enemies / There isn't much time, there isn't much"). A variation of this phrase will be used for Rosario: 1999 ("Open your mind, there’s not much time) recorded in 1998 and released in 1999.
