Sex Shooter is the second track on Apollonia 6’s first and only album Apollonia 6, and, four weeks before the album’s release, Sex Shooter was releases as the album’s first single. As such, the song is the first to be credited to Apollonia 6. Sex Shooter was written by Prince, but credited to Apollonia 6. The track is also featured in the movie Purple Rain, as Apollonia 6’s performance in the movie.

Basic tracking took place on 30 April 1983 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, the same day as Promise To Be True, and the track was originally planned for a second album by Vanity 6. It is unclear however if Vanity cut vocals for the song on this day or at a later occasion.

At a later session Brenda Bennett and possibly Susan Moonsie replaced Prince's backing vocals. When Vanity decided not to participate in the Purple Rain movie and left the group and, Prince restructured the group as Apollonia 6, after casting Apollonia for the project in September or October 1983. New lead vocals were recorded by her and Prince worked on the track further in October and November.

In 2019, Prince’s own version was released as the first track on the posthumous album Originals.

  • The title is a wordplay on "Six Shooter", another name for a revolver (gun) that holds six cartridges.
  • Prince took the four-note riff heard at 0:09 from Sex Shooter and slowed it down to create a sequence that comes between “she’s always there” and “telling me how much she cares” at the 0:43 mark of She’s Always In My Hair; that song was listed as Sex Shooter on the studio work order.
