The Screams Of Passion is the third track on The Family’s first and only album The Family, and, a month before the album’s release, The Screams Of Passion was released as the album’s first single. The song was written by Prince, but credited to St. Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin. In 1996, the song was also included as the fifth track on the soundtrack album Girl 6 (a compilation of music by Prince and associated artists for the movie Girl 6, directed by Spike Lee).

Basic tracking took place on 18 August 1984 at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie (the day after The Dance Electric and two days before God. St. Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin overdubbed vocals onto the track in late 1984, and Clare Fischer added orchestral overdubs in a later session, possibly in early 1985.

Its release prior to the album mean that The Screams Of Passion was the first track to be credited to The Family; it was also the first Prince-related track to be released featuring string orchestration by Clare Fischer.
