Sign O’ The Times (Super) Deluxe Edition is an elaborated remastered re-issue of Prince’s ninth full-length studio album Sign O’ The Times and the ninth posthumous album release overall. In the 3CD Deluxe Edition version, the remastered original album is augmented with 1 CD with 13 b-sides, extended versions and edits from the Sign O’ The Times era. The more elaborate Super Deluxe Edition version has fourth, fifth and sixth disc with 45 previously unreleased songs or versions from the Sign O’ The Times era, a 2CD with the 20 June 1987 show in Utrecht, The Netherlands from the Sign O’ The Times Tour as well as a 2 hour 15 minutes DVD release of the concert on 31 December 1987, Paisley Park Studios, New Years Eve show. The DVD also includes the promo videos for Sign O’ The Times, U Got The Look and I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man. Sessions and compiling See Sign O’ The Times for details on recording of the sixteen original tracks. The Prince Estate started to work on Sign O’ The Times Deluxe Edition in 2019, following the release of 1999. The original album was remastered by Bernie Grundman, who also did the mastering of the initial release in 1987. Grundman also worked on the third disc, Promo mixes and B-Sides Remastered which contains all the edited versions, remixes and B-sides that were officially released on singles to promote the album in 1987. All other songs on the released have [the 2020 remaster] label as well, but are in fact first mastered by Grundman and released for the first time in 2020. The fourth, fifth and sixth volumes of the CD-version, Vault Tracks I, Vault Tracks II and Vault Tracks III contain 29 previously unreleased songs (some in different versions) and eleven previously unreleased versions (alternate or initial takes) of songs recorded between May 1979 (the original version of I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man) and July 1987 (songs intended for a project with Bonnie Raitt) that didn’t come to fruition. It should be noted that while from the right era, some of these songs were never considered for the Sign O’ The Times album. Seven tracks (I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 Version), Power Fantastic (Live In Studio), A Place In Heaven (Prince Vocal), Eggplant, Forever In My Life (Early Vocal Run-Through), Crucial (Alternate Lyrics) and There’s Something I Like About Being Your Fool) were mixed by Niko Bolas in 2020 specifically for this release and duplicates as closely as possible the original mixes. The Prince Estate originally intended to also include the Sign O’ The Times film on DVD in the Super Deluxe Edition set, but the legal complications over the rights (which have passed between several companies since they were sold to Cineplex Odeon Films in 1987) prevented them from doing so. Promotion The Prince Estate and The Current radio-station produced an eight-part podcast series, presented by Minneapolis Music journalist Andrea Swensson titled “Prince: The Story of Sign O’ The Times”. In this audio-documentary Susan Rogers, Coke Johnson, Lisa Coleman Wendy Melvoin, Susannah Melvoin, Matt Fink, Brown Mark, Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, Warner Bros executive Lenny Waronker, The Prince Estate archivist Michael Howe, and archivist and author Duane Tudahl, among others, share stories about the making-of the album. Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 1) was streamed on Prince’s Youtube channel and other streaming platforms on 25 June 2020, the day the set’s release was officially announced, followed by I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 Version) in July, and Cosmic Day, Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 2) and Forever In My Life (Early Vocal Run-Through) in August and I Need A Man in September.
