♥ Or $ (a.k.a. Love Or $ and Love Or Money) was released as the b-side of Kiss, the first single from Prince’s eighth album Parade, the third to be credited to Prince and the Revolution. It was one of only two b-sides from 1982-1989 not to be included on The B-Sides collection in 1993 (the other being Alexa De Paris), for unknown reasons. Basic tracking took place on 8 July 1985 at the Washington Avenue Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota (on the same day as Girls & Boys and Alexa De Paris). ♥ Or $ is the first studio track released by Prince (under his own name) to contain musical contributions by Eric Leeds who would become long-term musical collaborators (Eric Leeds had previously contributed to The Family side-project). Additional Information See also Trivia Kiss single ♥ Or $ is the earliest occurrence of Prince using a non-alphanumerical symbol in the title of a song, something which later became commonplace. Prince subsequently released songs entitled Love and $, although both are musically and lyrically unrelated to this song. There were tentative plans to shoot a video for the song while in France for the filming of Under The Cherry Moon, but in the end the shoot never took place, although storyboards for scenes in the video were created. When was asked in an interview conducted through and published on his official website, Love4OneAnother.com on 17 November, 1997: "Was Love or Money written for or about anyone in particular?", he replied "Written 4 the character of Mary Sharon".
