Orgasm (a.k.a. The previous year, however, Poem was included as an untitled segue preceding What’s My Name in the Glam Slam Ulysses stage-show (credited, as was the whole project, to ).
A tape containing Poem and seven other new tracks (a 10-minute version of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Interactive, Days Of Wild, Now, Acknowledge Me, 319, and Pheromone) as well as the show given at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota on 13 February 1994, am was purchased by some European radio networks. This tape was broadcast in early March 1994 (by Los 40 Principales in Spain, Radio Veronica and Tros in The Netherlands and DSR3 in the Switzerland). Four months before the album’s release in 1994, Poem was heard played over the credits in The Beautiful Experience TV movie (again credited, as was the whole project, to ).
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in early 1993 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (as Poem). The track reuses a guitar solo from Private Joy (recorded exactly 13 years before the Come album release, on 16 August 1981, at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California) and vocals from Vanity 6’s unreleased track Vibrator (recorded in May 1983 at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota). The "poem" was largely based on lines adapted from the Old Testament book Song of Songs (also known as the Song of Solomon). Poem was originally included as the ninth and final track on a March 1993 configuration of Come. It was kept for inclusion on the Come album as the first track on a 11 March 1994 configuration. For the final configuration of the album, the track was renamed Orgasm and portions of the "poem" were distributed as opening segments of other tracks; Pheromone, Race, Dark and Letitgo include segments in their opening seconds.
