Peach is the twelfth track (first of two new tracks) on Prince’s compilation album The Hits 2 (which is also included as the second disc of The Hits / The B-Sides), and, three weeks after the album’s release, Peach was released in the UK as the album’s first single (Pink Cashmere had been released prior to this in North America). A North American release of Peach followed two months after the album’s release. In 2002, a live version of Peach was released on One Nite Alone... The Aftershow: It Ain’t Over!.
Basic tracking took place between 14 and 25 June 1992 at Olympic Studios, London, during the Diamonds And Pearls Tour dates in London. The song loops a sampled moan by actress Kim Basinger from Soul Psychodelicide.
It was initially considered for an early configuration of the Gold Nigga album by The N.P.G., but was omitted from it on the released incarnation, and eventually found a home as a previously unreleased track on The Hits 2.
The song was featured as background music in a rough cut of James L. Brooks’ movie I’ll Do Anything. Contrary to the other tracks offered by Prince for this movie and its soundtrack, the version heard in the scene is performed by him (identical to the released one) and not re-sung by one of the actors. Although it was included in the score, Peach is not known to have been planned for the soundtrack however.
The live version played in 1993 added a guitar and drum coda following the song’s ending — this coda was later used for the song Chaos And Disorder in October 1993.
