Guitar was the first single to be released from the album Planet Earth, by Prince. It was released in Europe a week before the album was included free with the UK/Ireland newspaper The Mail on Sunday (see Planet Earth for details), and was not released elsewhere in the world.

An alternate version of Guitar (often inaccurately referred to as a demo), was released on 3121.com five months earlier, to coincide with Prince's appearance on the Super Bowl XLI halftime show, and is included here for clarity's sake, although it could also be considered a separate release.

Promotion

On 31 May, 2007, the song Guitar was available for free download through Verizon Wireless' VCast program - although it is not directly linked to the single release, it is included here for clarity's sake.

The single charted poorly in several countries in Europe, reaching top 20 position only in the Netherlands and Italy.

• In the US, Verizon VCast ran a 30-second TV advertisement for the download of Guitar, beginning 31 May, 2007.
• In the UK/Ireland, Prince's release of Planet Earth through the Mail on Sunday newspaper generated a huge amount of media discussion, which served as unofficial promotion for the single also (although this may in fact have hurt sales, as potential customers knew they could receive the full album free with the newspaper).
