Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse
Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse
Overview & History
The Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse was not a professional studio as such, but a converted rehearsal space where Prince used to record mostly band performances between May 1984 and December 1984.
The warehouse, located on 6472 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Praire, MN was first scouted as a filming location for Purple Rain; the interior of Prince's house in the film was built in the warehouse, as was the hospital room when he visits his dad. At that time Prince rehearsed and recorded in another warehouse in St. Louis Park.
While initially rented for filming purposes, the facility was later bought by Prince for $ 400.000, and converted into a rehearsal space / studio. In early 1985 it was razed as Prince wanted to built a new studio there (later: Paisley Park Studios), but the plot turned out not suitable for the envisioned studio, so Prince bought land near his home in Chanhassen to have the studio built instead.
Prince started using the warehouse as a rehearsal space and studio in May, 1984, after it was a filming location for Purple Rain in November and December, 1983 and Prince spent the first four months of 1984 in Los Angeles.
Studio
Prince used the building as rehearsal space and make shift studio. Like in the previous St. Louis Park sound issues were a challenge, as the building was highly unsuited for recordings.
