Mutiny is the second track on The Family’s first and only album The Family. The song was written by Prince, but credited to Jerome Benton. In 2001, a live performance medley by Prince of Controversy and Mutiny was released as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 2.

Basic tracking took place on 27 June 1984 at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, MN, USA (five days after recording Mazarati – later renamed Susannah’s Pajamas, on the same day High Fashion and Desire). Saxophone overdubs by Eric Leeds were recorded a few days later, on 2 July 1984. St. Paul Peterson overdubbed vocals onto the track in late 1984 - early 1985.

On 23 April 2012, a 9:54 rehearsal version of Mutiny containing an interpolation of Ice Cream Castles by Prince and the New Power Generation and likely recorded around mid-April 2012 was streamed on drfunkenberry.com to promote the forthcoming Welcome 2 Australia Tour. The track was sent to Paul Peterson prior to its online stream, and fDeluxe (as The Family became known) responded the following week by streaming Hot Summer At Menard’s (a spoof commercial for Menards, a mid-west home goods store, using Prince’s Hot Summer as background music) on drfunkenberry.com.
