Days Of Wild is the first track on the third disc of Prince’s 20th album Crystal Ball (his fourth using the name ). The released version is a live version recorded on 9 December 1995 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Four years earlier, however, a 1994 live version was included as the second track in the The Beautiful Experience TV-special.

In 1996, a 1995 live version was included on the Love 4 One Another TV-special. In 2001, a portion of a 1999 live version was included in NPG Ahdio Show # 1.

In 2002, Days Of Wild, containing a 2002 live version, was released as a single, initially given to attendees at the final night of the Xenophobia Celebration, before becoming available to purchase online and at shows.

On 12 June 2012, a 19:00 rehearsal version of Days Of Wild containing interpolations of Ain’t Nobody, Get Wild, America and Wild And Loose by Prince and the New Power Generation was streamed on Cassandra O’Neal’s Facebook page. A few minutes later Shelby J. also shared the rehearsal on her Soundcloud page. 45 minutes before the "jam" was streamed, Liv Warfield advertised it on her Facebook page, with the following text:

"On April 17 2012, several bystanders in the streets of Chanhassen, Minnesota saw Paisley Park swaying back and forth 2 the sound of "Days of Wild and Loose". This is a copy of the 19 minute rehearsal of that jam! Thank U, Prince and The New Power Generation..."Aint nobody LOVE YA betta than AUSTRALIA!" THIS IS SHO NUFF FUNKY...ENJOY!".

Basic tracking for the original version took place in late January 1994. A tape containing the studio version of Days Of Wild and seven other new tracks (a 10-minute version of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Interactive, Now, Poem, Acknowledge Me, 319, and Pheromone) as well as the show given at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota on 13 February 1994, am was purchased by some European radio networks. This tape was broadcast in early March 1994 (by Los 40 Principales in Spain, Radio Veronica and Tros in The Netherlands and DSR3 in the Switzerland). The studio version of the song was later aired at a party at Glam Slam in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 16 March 1994 (along with Hate U, Billy Jack Bitch, Now and a remix of Pope, hours after recording Letitgo).

The studio version was included as the sixth track on an untitled early-1994 album (likely an early configuration of The Gold Experience). It was then included as the fourth track (second song) on a March 1994 configuration of The Gold Experience, and was kept as the fourth track (second song) on a May 1994 configuration, as well as the seventh track (fifth song) on a 13 October 1994 configuration. It was removed for the final release, with little explanation. Mayte was quoted as saying Prince had "other plans" for the track, but it is unclear what these plans were. The studio version of Days Of Wild remains unreleased.

The track’s lead line (usually played on synths, although sometimes by horns) is a modified version of the lead line from Caravan, a jazz standard composed by Juan Tizol (with lyrics by Irving Mills) and first performed by Duke Ellington in 1936.

The studio version (and most live versions) of the track also contain repeated vocal samples of "Hold on to your wigs" and "Diss me" from Ninety-9’s tracks The Mood For Love and Simlac respectively (both containing input by Prince) - it is unknown if these samples were added immediately or at a later date. Additionally, the sampled strings in the opening of the Crystal Ball version (actually the end of the previous performance, Shhh), are sampled from Violet The Organ Grinder, also heard in Paris 1798430.
