Sexy M.F. is the second track on Prince's 14th album , the second album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation, and, three and a half months before the album's release, Sexy M.F. was released as the album's first single. Also in 1992, some remixes of the track, including the edit titled Sexy Mutha, were included on My Name Is Prince, the album's second single. In 1993, Sexy M.F. was included as the 14th track on The Hits 2 (also included as the second disc of The Hits / The B-Sides). While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in early December 1991, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions that produced Love 2 The 9's, The Sacrifice Of Victor, The Morning Papers, Arrogance, and And God Created Woman). Sexy M.F. was placed as the opening track of the album for a while, until Prince later added the track My Name Is Prince, recorded a few months previously. It was included as the third track (second song) on the March 1992 and Summer 1992 configurations of the album, before the Album Intro segue was removed.
